ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"Art has always been a big part of my life. I am grateful that even when I was a young child, my family has been supportive of the creative endeavors I’ve immersed myself in. From simple drawings to more complex ones, the desire to portray something, or someone, has always fascinated me. Likewise, many artists across generations have inspired me and continue to inspire me through their works, their processes, and their philosophies. The study of art as a skill, has taught me perseverance, patience, tenacity, and humility, to name a few. It is important for me to create works that are visually pleasing, because I believe Beauty has the ability to uplift the human soul. What we perceive through the senses can evoke sublime ideals that man is capable of and should ultimately aim for.

I am grateful to be invited to the second group exhibit for San Sebastian Basilica, and just as the title of the exhibit suggests, all my works are for and about Our Lady. She has been depicted in paint, clay, stone, and marble to name a few, but no one has ever succeeded in even being able to capture the beauty that God has bestowed upon her. It is perhaps for this reason that she has come to be one of my favorite subjects. It is my hope that through these pieces the viewer can be drawn to the painting and beyond, to contemplate the most marvelous creature God the Father has made. And in doing so, may we, who call ourselves her children, be always in awe at the realization that we have a most beautiful, tender, and powerful mother in her."

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rosa Pia I. Soriano (b. 1981) holds a master’s degree in Education and has focused full-time in drawing, painting, and conducting art lessons since 2015. She lived for eight years in Singapore where she enrolled at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. She also took online courses, joined artist groups, and devoured pages of art books. From 2016 to 2019, she joined weeklong iconography workshops conducted by an Eastern Orthodox monk of the Prosopon School of Iconology. In June 2019, she was part of an intensive workshop that studied the renaissance masters in Florence, Italy. Soriano has joined group exhibitions both locally and abroad, holding her first sold out solo exhibit titled Anagōgē at the University of Asia and the Pacific. She considers herself more of a conduit of artistic tradition than a contemporary artist. She prefers subjects that are easily comprehensible, in hopes of drawing the viewer into contemplation. Her real passion lies in ecclesiastic art and painting religious subjects for veneration.

CURATOR'S NOTES
Asst. Prof. Mary Ann Venturina Bulanadi, Ph.D.

The art pieces of Pia Soriano speak of her dedication as an artist and her faithfulness to the Almighty. The images she created gives a pleasant spirit for those who desire to adore through the painting.

The Nuestra Señora de la Salud painting gives an impression of over-all majestic aura. It is inspired by the old scripts; the images and background are enveloped with gold while the arch and columns are integrated with the San Sebastian Basilica rust. The work inspires the viewer to behold a masterpiece in gold and rust—a triumph of strength and grace as needed to face today's challenges worldwide.
